Center Police Department Officer Brian Wright was recognized earlier in December with the “Life Saving Award” for his selfless act of saving the life of an infant on June 12, 2020. The infant and her mother were present on Dec. 4, when the award was presented at the Center Police Department's Christmas party. Center Chief of Police Jim Albers presented Officer Wright a heartfelt "Life Saving Award,” which he said is one of the most prestigious awards a police officer can receive in the course of fulfilling their duties. The basis of this well-deserved honor was an incident which occurred at 1:30 p.m. on June 20. “A distraught mother pulled into Saf-T-First on Tenaha Street,” Albers said. “According to the police department dispatch report at 1:31 p.m, a 911 call of a child not breathing came into the police department. The dispatcher immediately conveyed the information to first responders over the radio. “At the time of the incident, Officer Brian Wright happened to be patrolling near the location,” Albers said. Wright was the first to arrive on the scene at 1:32 p.m. — less than a minute from being dispatched. “Without hesitation, Officer Wright exited his patrol unit and took the baby from the mother's arms,” Albers said. “He immediately administered first aid on the child. A few seconds later, the child began breathing on her own.” Afterwards, EMS arrived at the scene and transported the infant and her mother to the Shelby County Emergency Services and Diagnostic Imaging Center. “Officers courteously drove the mother's vehicle to the ER for her,” he said. “Officers then stayed at the ER until they knew that the child was fine and would make a full recovery.” Due to Wright's quick thinking and training, the child is a happy and healthy six months old now. “The Center Police Department would like to invite our citizens to extend their gratitude to having officers such as Brian Wright, patrolling the streets of Center, Texas,” Albers said.
