Life Saving Incident

January 20, 2020
Michigan
Oakland County
Orion Township

On Jan. 10, 2020 at 9:45 p.m., Sergeant Jeffrey Cardinal was dispatched on a call referencing a suicidal person in Orion Township. According to the sheriff’s office, that person had posted a video to social media saying goodbye to family members and had threatened suicide. When Sergeant Cardinal arrived on-scene, he spotted a car filled with thick smoke and a man inside who was making no attempt to exit the vehicle. Sergeant Cardinal broke the driver’s side window of the burning vehicle and safely removed the man. Once the man was out of immediate danger, Sergeant Cardinal extinguished the flames before they engulfed the entire vehicle. He then rendered aid to the man until EMS and a crew from the fire department arrived, the sheriff’s office said. For his efforts Sergeant Cardinal was honored with Michigan Sheriff’s Association 2020 Lifesaving Award On October 29, 2020, MSA Executive Director Matthew Saxton stated, “Sergeant Cardinal is the perfect example of someone who deserves this award. He put his safety on the line to save the life of someone else and his quick thinking helped to resolve this stressful incident in a safe manner.”

The history of law enforcement in the United States is a long and wonderful history of bravery. This website is dedicated to documenting the heroic deeds of law enforcement officers throughout the United States who have either given or risked their lives to save others. There are many stories of bravery and heroism for many who are considered first responders. However, it is those in law enforcement who are most likely to be the first to arrive upon a location requiring life saving acts engaging dangerous hostage takers, running into burning buildings/vehicles, providing first aid to seriously injured victims, saving near drowning victims and much more are what the women and men of law enforcement do routinely and at many times, great peril to their own safety.
It is our mission to document the history of lives saved by those dedicated women and men in law enforcement. To share with others the dramatic deeds of those individuals who are the first, first responders. It is so important for our citizens to understand that law "enforcement" is not always about enforcing the law but rather being there when our citizens need us.
It is to this end we are dedicated to promoting documentation regarding the history of law enforcement and the lives they have saved.
