Life Saving Incident

May 23, 2018
CA
San Bernardino County
Highland

On May 23, 2018 Sergeant Jeremy Dean, Supervising District Attorney Investigator Thomas Boyles and Deputy Jonathan Ramstad were in the area of 9th Street and Rogers Lane in the City of Highland conducting a shooting investigation. They were standing next to a patrol vehicle when a car speeding north on Rogers Lane struck the rear of a patrol vehicle on the opposite side of the street, causing it to become airborne and roll towards them. The vehicle continued across the street and struck Dean, Boyles and Ramstad, momentarily pinning them against the vehicle they were standing next to. Dean and Boyles sustained major injuries. Ramstad ignored his own significant injuries and took immediate action when he saw Boyles motionless on the ground, gravely injured and bleeding profusely from his head. Ramstad instantly initiated emergency medical treatment. Ramstad used his bare hand and applied direct pressure to a large laceration on the back of Boyles head. Ramstad’s treatment slowed the bleeding and stabilized Boyles enough for him to be transported to the Loma Linda Medical Center. Boyles underwent surgery for multiple bone fractures, a large skull laceration and a severe brain injury. According to the treating physicians at the hospital, Ramstad’s presence of mind to render immediate medical aide saved Boyles’ life. The outcome would have been tragically different had Ramstad not rendered the medical attention he did. It is remarkable that Ramstad was able to help another, despite suffering his own injuries during the accident. Ramstad’s immediate action and response directly resulted in saving Boyles’ life.

The history of law enforcement in the United States is a long and wonderful history of bravery. This website is dedicated to documenting the heroic deeds of law enforcement officers throughout the United States who have either given or risked their lives to save others. There are many stories of bravery and heroism for many who are considered first responders. However, it is those in law enforcement who are most likely to be the first to arrive upon a location requiring life saving acts engaging dangerous hostage takers, running into burning buildings/vehicles, providing first aid to seriously injured victims, saving near drowning victims and much more are what the women and men of law enforcement do routinely and at many times, great peril to their own safety.
It is our mission to document the history of lives saved by those dedicated women and men in law enforcement. To share with others the dramatic deeds of those individuals who are the first, first responders. It is so important for our citizens to understand that law "enforcement" is not always about enforcing the law but rather being there when our citizens need us.
It is to this end we are dedicated to promoting documentation regarding the history of law enforcement and the lives they have saved.
